All Duravit Features and Materials at a Glance
Bathroom Ceramics
Sanitary ceramic is a classic
bathroom material and is commonly used in the production of sinks, toilets and bidets. At Duravit, too, bathroom ceramic
is one of the most commonly used materials.
Production:
The base materials used in Duravit's bathroom ceramics consist of natural
raw materials: clay, kaolin, quartz, and feldspar. It is cast in plaster or
plastic molds (in a process called slip casting). Subsequent processing, such
as drilling faucet holes, has to be done manually. The glaze consists of
quartz, chalk, feldspar, and the mineral rock called dolomite. The glaze is
applied by hand or by a glazing robot, depending on the model. Our toilets and
urinals are also completely glazed on the inside, which is a sign of the
highest quality. The material's extremely high temperature resistance allows it
to be fired at a temperature of about 2,368°F (1,280°C).
Material properties:
Bathroom ceramics are resistant to
both heat and light. The smooth glaze is not only hygienic, but also resistant
to scratching and easy to clean. This being the case, ceramic is the optimal
material for the production of sinks and toilets. Features such as WonderGliss
or HygieneGlaze make these already great properties even better.
Bathroom Acrylic
Bathroom acrylic is also frequently
found in the bathroom. Bathtubs and shower trays, in particular, are
often made from this lightweight material.
Production:
The base material for bathroom-grade acrylic is acrylic (PMMA-*) sheets in various thicknesses. These sheets are cut to size and then thermally shaped. This thermoformed acrylic base is then reinforced on the underside with wood and a fiberglass-reinforced resin mixture. After cooling, polymerization occurs in the fiberglass-reinforced resin mixture. Depending on the bathtub model, acrylic panels are then added seamlessly.
*Polymethyl methacrylate
Material properties:
Bathroom acrylic is a lightweight
material with a smooth and non-porous surface that is warm and pleasant to the
touch. The material is the same color throughout, and resistant to UV and
fading. The white gloss finish of bathroom acrylic matches perfectly with the white glaze of any
ceramic items in the bathroom. Bathtubs and shower trays made of bathroom-grade acrylic are
easy to install because they are relatively lightweight. They are also durable
and easy to clean with standard household cleaning products.
